New Town Mayor for 17/18
Published: 30 May 2017

We are delighted to announce that, at the annual council meeting held on
17 May 2017,
Cllr Philip Abraham was elected unanimously as the town mayor for 2017/18. Cllr
Abraham was born in India, but has lived in Loughton with his family since 2000. He has represented the residents of Alderton
ward from 2012.
Cllr Chris Pond, in his
nomination, said “Philip is now in his 2nd term as a town
councillor and has served his apprenticeship as a devoted member of the Planning
& Licensing Committee. With the
committee’s frequent and lengthy meetings, he has shown patience, endurance and
forbearance”.
After
his election, Philip said "I am absolutely thrilled to have been elected
as the mayor.
I feel honoured to have been given the opportunity to serve the community in
this role".
Members
also paid tribute to the work of outgoing mayor, Cllr Carol Davies, commenting
that the role of mayor was no small undertaking and she had
carried out her duties very well. In
responding Carol described being welcomed by the Loughton community as an excellent
experience and that at events she had smiled until her cheeks got cramped.
The new town mayor, Cllr Abraham, congratulated
longstanding councillor Stephen Murray on his appointment as Deputy Town Mayor. Stephen has previously served as the
inaugural chairman of the town council after its formation in 1996 and again in
2000.
